Children’s Weekend Activities

Children’s Weekend Activities in Four Countries: Context for Personal and Social Development

Asil Ali Özdoğru

Out-of-school time constitutes a major context of social and emotional development for children across cultures. In this book, which is based on the author’s dissertation study, children’s weekend activities, activity choice, and emotional outcomes were examined among fourth-grade students in Bulgaria, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States. Results suggest that cultures differ in the available and socially acceptable types of weekend activities as demonstrated by the time spent by children in different activities and extent of parental involvement in children’s activity decisions. Weekend time provides important developmental niches within which children in different countries experience activities that contribute to their personal and social developmental outcomes.

Dijksterhuis and van Knippenberg (1998) reported that participants primed with a category associated with intelligence (“professor”) subsequently performed 13% better on a trivia test than participants primed with a category associated with a lack of intelligence (“soccer hooligans”). In two unpublished replications of this study designed to verify the appropriate testing procedures, Dijksterhuis, van Knippenberg, and Holland observed a smaller difference between conditions (2%–3%) as well as a gender difference: Men showed the effect (9.3% and 7.6%), but women did not (0.3% and −0.3%). The procedure used in those replications served as the basis for this multilab Registered Replication Report. A total of 40 laboratories collected data for this project, and 23 of these laboratories met all inclusion criteria. Here we report the meta-analytic results for those 23 direct replications (total N = 4,493), which tested whether performance on a 30-item general-knowledge trivia task differed between these two priming conditions (results of supplementary analyses of the data from all 40 labs, N = 6,454, are also reported). We observed no overall difference in trivia performance between participants primed with the “professor” category and those primed with the “hooligan” category (0.14%) and no moderation by gender.

Culture, Play, and Education

Cross-Cultural Psychology of Play and Early Childhood Education

Asil Ali Özdoğru

Play is a universal form of human behavior that has been observed across all cultures and constitutes a fundamental role in children’s development. This chapter summarizes theory, research, and practice of play in early childhood education from a cross-cultural perspective. Even though there are common qualities of play, there is a great deal of variation within and across cultures. In the multicultural environment of globalizing world, early childhood professionals need to make better use of play from an intercultural perspective. Effective utilization of play in early childhood education needs a thorough understanding of scientific theories and cross-cultural research on play. Quality early childhood education programs incorporate play as a central element in the curriculum with consideration of both individual- and group-level differences. Developmentally and culturally appropriate practice in early childhood education demands the assessment and utilization of individual and cultural characteristics of children in the planning and implementation of play-based interventions.

FYI 2018

Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.

Isaac Newton (1680s) Fragments from a Treatise on Revelation

There is something at the bottom of every new human thought, every thought of genius, or even every earnest thought that springs up in any brain, which can never be communicated to others, even if one were to write volumes about it and were explaining one's idea for thirty-five years; there's something left which cannot be induced to emerge from your brain, and remains with you forever; and with it you will die, without communicating to anyone perhaps the most important of your ideas.

ECCE Programs

Program Development, Assessment, and Evaluation in Early Childhood Care and Education

Asil Ali Özdoğru

Early childhood years are a fundamental period of development in human lifespan. Infant and toddler care programs, early childhood education services, after-school care programs, and parenting programs are foundational in the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development of children. Development of quality early childhood programs can be realized through consideration of various elements of quality. Early childhood care and education (ECCE) program designers should aim to develop safe, healthy, responsive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate programs. Program curriculum, which takes place at the heart of program development, should also be responsive to children's needs and interests to construct meaningful, age-appropriate, and play-based learning experiences. Ongoing assessment and evaluation are integral part of quality ECCE program development. Early childhood assessment consists of child-level and program-level assessments. Assessment of children's developmental outcomes and program environmental characteristics play key roles in the development and evaluation of ECCE programs. Even though there are many available tools of assessment, common features of quality assessments include reliability, validity, purposefulness, and universality. Evaluation of early childhood programs makes use of different methodologies designed to study program process, outcome, impact, and cost-benefit. Development of quality early childhood care and education programs need systematic planning, implementation, and monitoring through the use of quality assessment and evaluation methodologies. This chapter provides a synthesis of the current state of knowledge in program development, assessment, and evaluation in early care and education based on high quality research studies coming from a variety of fields.

Neuromyths: A Challenge for Learning and Teaching Neurosciences

Asil Ali Özdoğru and Nursena Balatekin

Neuromyths are misconceptions generated by misunderstanding or misquoting of facts established by neuroscience about various topics such as critical periods, bilingualism, and hemispherization. Many teachers and students believe in these neuromyths, which present a great challenge for the meaningful learning and use of neuroscientific knowledge. The availability and dissemination of questionable content through various traditional and social media outlets fuels the spread of neuromythical ideas. This paper outlines the common neuromyths and proposes ways to deal with them for learners and teachers. In order to battle and supress neuromyths, neuroscientists and educators should increase collaboration and teachers should adopt more effective teaching strategies to deal with misconceptions.

Excelsior Newsletter

The Amsterdam Experience

Asil Ali Özdoğru

Hello, Hallo.

I was in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, last week for the 15th European Congress of Psychology. The congress was held from July 11th to 14th at the Amsterdam RAI Conference Center. It was organized by the Netherlands Institute of Psychologists and the Belgian Federation of Psychologists. There were over two thousand participants from all parts of the world presenting and discussing on a whole variety of topics in psychology.

I also presented a poster at the conference about one of our studies on facial feedback hypothesis. The hypothesis claims that individuals’ facial expressions affect their emotional experiences. Our findings showed that sense of humor, rather than the facial expressions, had a better role explaining individuals’ humor experience. I was glad to share and discuss our results and get to learn about other studies. The conference is a great professional development experience in the depth and breadth of psychology for both students and professors.

Conferences are also good opportunities to learn about host locations and cultures. It was my first time in the Netherlands and got to experience the Dutch culture. As a person who lived many years in Albany, New York, I was pleased to witness the Dutch heritage of my past hometown. The buildings, food, and even people looked very familiar in Amsterdam.

I advise and encourage all of my students and colleagues to attend this conference and other professional meetings. The next European Congress of Psychology will be held in Moscow in 2019. Hope to see you at one of those places in the future.

The Role of Sense of Humor in the Facial Feedback Effect

Asil Ali Özdoğru

The facial feedback hypothesis claims that individuals’ facial expressions can influence their emotional expressions. In their highly cited study testing this hypothesis, Strack and colleagues (1988) found that when participants evaluated the funniness of humorous cartoons holding a pen in their teeth, which stimulated a smile, gave higher ratings than participants holding a pen in their mouth inducing a pout. A recent multilab replication study by Wagenmakers and colleagues (2016) that involved 17 labs from 8 countries using the same protocol had failed to reproduce the facial feedback effect. As one of the participating labs, we wanted to test the role of sense of humor in this model, which is individuals’ tendency to appreciate, generate, and make use of humorous material. A total of 157 Turkish university students were asked to rate four of the original cartoons either in the smile or pout condition as in the multilab protocol and to complete a self-report measure of sense of humor at the end of the experimental procedures different than other labs. This study will present findings on the role of sense of humor in explaining individuals’ affective responses to humorous material under different facial feedback conditions and its implications for the study of individual differences in experimental investigations of emotional experience.
